Microsoft StaffHub

Designing core features for frontline workers

Background

StaffHub is a new Office365 web and mobile app that helps deskless workers manage their shifts, share files, and connect with coworkers.

I worked on various pieces of the UX/UI for both the web and mobile app.

I also led the design of the new tasks feature.

Solution

On-site research visits with a vineyard and hotel led to the following insight:

  • Tasks are typically created not with a specific frontline worker in mind. They are fluid, adhoc, and shared. Frontline workers self-organize and are empowered to solve issues as they come up, with minimal supervisor involvement unless there is an escalation.

Knowing this, I designed a tasks feature according to the following 2 goals:

  1. Tasks should default to everyone on a team. Frontline workers can reassign them later if needed.

  2. Creating tasks should be extremely lightweight. They can add details after creation.

Impact

StaffHub went to general availability in Jan 2017 to great fanfare. Eventually, StaffHub merged into Microsoft Teams on Oct 2018.
